Bench Signal #003 — three things from the bench, every Tuesday.

① This week's tip

iPhone 15 series with charging problems: before going anywhere near the Tristar/charging IC, check the USB-C port first. With the transition from Lightning, debris accumulation in the port became even more common. With a bright light and magnification, look for bent pins too. The USB-C port is mechanically more fragile than Lightning was. Most charging IC jobs on iPhone 15 series turn out to be dirty or lightly damaged ports.

② Prompt of the week

Use this to build an internal repair notes template:

I'm an Apple technician. Write a template for internal repair notes that I fill in for every job. Include: device details, customer complaint, diagnostic findings, parts needed, work completed, test results, and any follow-up notes. Keep it concise and scannable. Format as a simple fill-in template.

Standardising your repair notes takes one afternoon. After that, every job is documented consistently — useful when a customer comes back weeks later with a question.

③ Resource this week

Apple Configurator 2 — free on the Mac App Store

Official Apple app for managing iOS and iPadOS devices. Useful for DFU restores without iTunes, batch updates, and supervision features that Finder doesn't offer. Many independent technicians don't have it installed. Worth adding to your toolkit.

That's it for this week.

If this was useful, forward it to a colleague who'd appreciate it.
